More than 100 students, staff and faculty joined together on a sunny Wednesday afternoon to celebrate the first 20 years of Brooks College of Interdisciplinary Studies!
The pioneer and founder, Gayle Davis, was generously present to share her story of seeking a way to bring breadth into education, where up until then she could only find depth.
Davis, along with current Dean, Mark Schaub briefly shared stories of innovative passions that forced and stretched boundaries to prepare students to look beyond entrenched disciplinary categories.
From the beginning, Brooks College has offered expansive thinking and complex problem problem solving, offering students a place to integrate their expertise into the world.
Philanthropic donors and supporters Jim and Donna Brooks were warmly thanked, President Emeritus Thomas Haas as well as other previous faculty members who came to honor Brooks College's commitment to students.
President Philomena Mantella explained the critical role Brooks College plays in the larger GVSU Reach Higher 2025 strategic plan as the leader in adult learning and pedagogy.
It was the beginning of a year long celebration!

Padnos International Center

When I walked into the Brooks College Padnos International Center for my job interview, I was struck by how intensely and immediately I wanted to work there. There were different languages and maps on the walls, photos of students abroad, very cool and international staff and student workers. I loved it. I was so nervous I stammered through the first part of my interview, but they took a chance on an art student with a kind of random interdisciplinary background. It changed my life forever. For the last 12 years I have done work I care about with people I care about. Brooks College is a good place for that, and I am glad to have been a part of it.

This is my first year working at Brooks College, and I am deeply touched by how friendly my colleagues are. Whenever I have any questions regarding my courses, the faculty and staff at Brooks College always lend a helping hand immediately. I am excited to be working in a big family where everyone helps each other.
